March 1773
Gouda

seemd to me an operation which must require much slight & practise after this the whole shape was formd by laying it into a hollow mould of Brass & the head hollowd out by a brass form violently thrust into it but after all this it went through many hands cheifly of women & children who scrapd & polishd it before it was fit for baking.

after having seen this we repaired to our inn to drink tea & were there amusd by a couple of Storks the first we had seen who were making love up a chimney in which they had already began to build their nest.

at 4 we were packd up with our baggage into a post waggon for which we paid with two other passengers  when we reached half way we were drove into a large stable where the horses were to refresh themselves as long they told us as would allow us time to smoak a pipe.

at last we set forward & almost jolted to death the road being pavd & the waggon
