it is quite flat & fenced with ditches exactly as Lincolnshire except only that wood which is light sand & has in it some few swellings & sinkings of the ground in it.

At ½ past  2 we arrivd at Leysendam where we stayd & dind upon a water souche which when dressd in the house was brought us into the boat as much the most convenient room, here were sluices to raise the water a few inches & a large reservoir between them for the convenience of vessels passing each other the doors of the sluices were lifted up all together by a kind of windlass of the hight [height] of a mans breast.
