Feb, 1773 - Hague

I was obligd to dine & to sup with a small family party thanking my stars that we were not absolutely alone.

22.  Resolvd to go to Leyden today so Count Bentink Borrowed for us a yatch [yacht] belonging to the States in which we were to set out at 1 o'Clock the morn was spent in taking leave of our freinds [friends] & visiting Vosmaer of whom we learnd that Prof. Allemand & he were upon very bad terms so that he shewd us the Princes Cabinet very much against his inclination when in Allemands company he shewd us a snake alive from Surinam with large brown patches upon a cream colourd ground & some more curious things particularly a Chinese ball which sounds very well the closd up & without the least perforation he had dissected it & found within it another ball grated in which was a small one which beating again its sides gave the sound.

At one we set out in the yatch [yacht] which was very elegant furnishd with velvet & plate glass with a good fire in it & all kinds of furniture
