March 1773   Amsterdam

professor of Botany here

like Mr Brookes in London is an animal merchant with him we saw two of the white Bearded Ceylon monkies & ardea [genus Heron] nyticorant  & an Elephant in gold drawing a tower in imitation of those shewn in Spring gardens by Mr Cox but very ill executed from hence we went to the Botanick garden where the plants were very healthy but not so numerous as at Leyden, a dragon tree of an immense size which had a cupola built for it over the stove was the cheif the buildings however were better & better taken care of & warmd than at Leyden.

here we saw a tolerable collection of stuffd birds some insects & an herbarium of 190 species sent lately from Ceylon cheifly without fruitification.

from hence we went to a clockmaker Mr -- who has invented a clock which has gone by itself for 2 years & is therefore calld not unjustly a perpetual motion whether the principle was fallacious I could not discover but it was or appeard to be 4 balls
