March 1773 Gouda
through this town an operation which took up some time its cheif employment seemd to be the making of bricks of which immence quantities were to be seen as well as large heaps of clay of which they are made & numbers of ovens something like glasshouses but smaller in which the greatest part if not all are burnt. from hence we proceeded to Bodegrave [also spelt Bodegraven] a small town where leaving the track of the larger canals it was necessary to change our boat for one of a much less size drawn by a man instead of a horse this contrivance provd intolerably slow but by the good fortune of a breeze of wind springing which changd our towing into sailing we arrived at Gouda commonly calld Gergau at 2 o'clock full two hours before the boat usually arrives there.
These two hours were clear gain to us & we employd them in viewing the church famous for its painted glass I firmly believe the best in Europe & in great abundance.
