the Flocks are absolutely deteriorated, by breeding with cross bred, and inferior Animals. It is true, that the whole number of Sheep, is increasing, but they are divided into small flocks, the proprietors of which, prefer weight of fleece, to extreme fineness, and, in the pursuit of immediate advantage, lose sight of remote and permanent ill consequences.
A variety of causes seem to be thus operating simultaneously, to deteriorate the quality of German Wools, & whilst the whole quantity produced, is on the increase, to diminish the quantity of fine Wool. The great Market for the latter, is in England. For the inferior qualities, better prices are obtainable on the Continent, than in this Country; and the Manufacture of Cloth, appears to be increasing upon the Continent, in a greater proportion, than the growth of
