Lohmen 7th Jany 1830
Visited the King of Saxony's best flock, at the Royal Farm at Lohmen.
There are two Royal flocks, of inferior quality, at other Farms near Dresden. The Lohmen flock is the "pepiniere". It consists of about 1200 Sheep. Their general appearance, is by no means striking. There is a great diversity of character & quality - some very coarse, & none so fine as I had anticipated.
The Ewes were, generally speaking, out of condition - their fleeces ragged looking, and the points of the Staples much injured, by exposure to wet, during Autumn.
This is not the case with the Rams. The two year olds, in particular, were in excellent order, & many of them, as large as our Rams, of the same Age.
Their wool too, appeared to me better than that of the Ewes, probably, because uninjured by exposure, & because the
