Frankfort, Sur Maine

30th November 1829.

At the Table d'hote, we met an Englishman, Mr Meyer, who had been settled during the last ten years, in Prussian Poland, where he has become a Landed Proprietor. He possesses a flock of 1000 merinos (not thorough bred, which he says very few of the German Sheep are); His fleeces average 2½ lbs when washed & he obtained for them, this year, about 20d pr lb, on the spot, a higher price than he could have got in the English Market. A neighbour of his has a thorough bred flock, the fleeces of which sell at from 3s/ to 4s/ pr lb, but do not weigh more than 1¼ lb each. The great object in this instance, being the sale of Rams, which are disposed of at various prices, from £3 upwards, according to their quality. Occasionally as much as £100 has been obtained for one ram from this Flock.
