From Liege to Verviers, the road winds through a rich & picturesque Valley, swarming with population, which may be termed the Vale of Stroud of the Netherlands. The neighbourhood of Verviers in particular, is thickly studded with Cloth Factories, the most extensive of which, belongs to Madame Bartolet, a Widow Lady of very enterprising character. More than 1600 work people, are said to be constantly employed in her Factory.
The Manufacturers of the Netherlands (I believe I might say of the Continent) are exceedingly cautious, how they admit strangers, more especially English, to view their Establishments. The only Factory to which we could obtain access, was that of Mr Hodson, an Englishman, who has been settled here nearly thirty years.
