There are here 750 Sheep - the Wool of good quality, & some of the Sheep apparently well bred. There are three men in charge of the Flock, & the system of feeding &c is the same as at the Farms near Leipsic.
28th December
Visited the Flock of Mr Gadegast, at Ochatz, which is small, but in high estimation. The Sheep are large, & in good condition. They appear to be of the Leonesa race. Mr G. informed me that he was in the habit of putting the Rams to Ewes of 11 months old - by which means, he thought the ill effects of high feeding were counteracted.
This seems a strange doctrine; but William will remember the experiment once tried at Camden, of keeping the finest flock of young Ewes from the ram, a year longer than usual, in order to give them additional strength - the
