[Page 9]

sufficient, our compatriots in Germany, with all the embargos, will probably be just as bad, if not worse, off than we are. The wish to fortify oneself occasionally at this restaurant may be understandable, but to splurge there daily, and both mornings and lunchtimes as some of the gentlemen, notably from Hong Kong, are doing, is outright wastefulness and should be damned. What’s striking is that from the day we took over the management of the canteen, the rations have been reduced. Instead of the Australian rations we are now given Imperial rations, which compare as follows:

Australian ration - Imperial ration
1½ lb meat - 10 oz
1½ lb bread - 1½ lb
1½ lb potatoes + vegies - ½ lb
½ oz tea - ½ oz
1/3 oz coffee - 1 oz
4 oz jam - 2 oz
1/3 oz salt - ½ oz
1/32 oz pepper - 1/72 oz
3 oz sugar - 2 oz
— dried peas and beans - 2 oz
— condensed milk - 0.8 oz

Thus the latter are not insignificantly less favourable
