He tried to get away but couldn&rsquo;t, and died a slow and terrible death. &nbsp;One day, at 7 o&rsquo;clock in the morning, right after the gates opened, we heard somebody shout that a whale was on the beach and like wildfire the news spread and even the late risers in camp rushed out of their cells and to the beach to observe, from a safe distance, the futile efforts of the great big beast. One could see how helpless such an animal is when taken out of its habitat. The poor guy, trapped in the low tide, tried to break loose by pounding his huge tail, but instead got more and more stuck in the sand, not helped by his enormous weight, and eventually the bolder ones among us dared approach and hopped on his back, where they began to harpoon him with an iron rod, and thus the execution, or rather, the great big slaughter began.&nbsp;Berblingen,</p>
