One could despair.</p><p>2/6/17.<br />Labour unrest is not confined to the central powers, because even from England news has reached us 14 days ago that workers at an ammunition factory are on strike. The main demand of these people is that none of them be drafted to the front. That means that patriotism is wearing thin and the yearning for peace is gaining ground even in England. In Germany, the conservatives and the socialists continue to be poles apart about the war, and the government doesn&rsquo;t seem to manage any kind of reconciliation. Bethmann-Hollweg&rsquo;s plea in his speech of May 15 doesn&rsquo;t sound very convincing, and he is being attacked by the socialists for his indecisive stance and remarks.
