They are funny and cute critters that feed on grass and herbs and become quite tame.</p><p>There are many types of birds, but only a few sing. It struck me how many of the birds have an almost hoarse call, especially a certain kind of raven whose cawing sounds like the crying of a hungry baby. A rather peculiar bird is the Cookaburra, [Kookaburra] which is abundant in New South Wales; especially during the rutting season they appear in large numbers near the camp. It’s a grey-brown bird, at least as big as a German raven, with a very pointed bill just like the kingfisher that can do a lot of damage. His call is very peculiar, sounding like hoarse human laughter, which accounts for his nickname, the laughing Jack. When several of the birds call each other, it’s quite a sound.
