To judge from the news, it seems almost certain that he was ready to begin negotiations and come to an agreement with Germany. At the last minute, it seems this was prevented by toppling Asquith and installing Lloyd George. The latter declared that he was just in time to prevent a move that would have amounted to the worst defeat of England since the battle of Hastings. It&rsquo;s a great pity that a rapprochement did not occur, because with a seemingly disheartened Asquith peace could have been more easily achieved than with a stubborn and dictatorial Lloyd George. We may not know until many years later if it was our diplomats that failed to reach an agreement with Asquith or if there were other reasons. At any rate, a good chance [the psychological moment] has been missed.</p>
