<p>[Page 24]</p><p>a toast to my beloved I have slowly let the wine roll down my throat during the holiday. After a prolonged abstinence even a small drop is stimulating. The previous day’s grief slowly sank into oblivion and the hope of an imminent release, at least of us elderly, began its rise. I at least was focusing more on the future than on the past. How I look forward to seeing my beloved family again!</p><p>Our relations with the new commanders here and in Liverpool seem to be good so far because those deported during the strike – Gerbrecht, Hering, von Fetten, etc – have recently returned. With them, and after the departure of some Catholic clergymen, we now have almost the same amount of Protestant priests. They are mostly pastors from German villages in NSW and Queensland, and almost all born here of German parents, Australians, in fact, and yet interned! An incredible nastiness! They are pretty harmless and we’ve dubbed them bush pastors. I assume they had to hold their sermons in those villages mostly in English,</p>
