to the northward of him quite Clear of Ice his Compass he said was very unsteady often pointing to the northward from the North the way [indecipherable] or passage between the main of Spitsbergen & the NE Island has generaly a stream of wind blowing through it which will put a ship past almost all her sails while another lying not a mile from her under either of the Headlands will be quite becalm'd in the Lat of 75 they said that Ice was always met with the fairway between Spitzbergen & Groenland which they imagind ran off like a point from the shore & probably markd the outlet of some fresh river off the extreme point of this Sea   they had Soundings from 80 to 100 fathoms.

11.  Went this morn to see some pictures which had been collected by the Prince Galitzin the Russian Envoy for the Empress they had been bought at Great Prizes 1500 for 2 Van Loos they were certainly fine of the master whose
