The position of Premier Hughes is rather shaky as a result, especially after his own Labor Party recently toppled him. A major platform of the Labor Party is the principle of &ldquo;no conscription&rdquo; to which Hughes once had to commit. But man changes as time goes by and becomes forgetful, and rising income and wealth gradually turn a Labor man into a Liberal. It&rsquo;s these vicissitudes that Mr Hughes is now experiencing! Will he come out of it in good shape? Hughes, by the way, is a classic example of what can become of a man in Australia. William Morris Hughes was born somewhere in Wales and is thus a compatriot of Lloyd George, not a true-blue Australian. He came to Australia as a trader and repairer of umbrellas and joined the then-insignificant Labor Party; both he and the party rose to office and status, and so he is now the Premier and dictator of Australia,</p>
