The position of Premier Hughes is rather shaky as a result, especially after his own Labor Party recently toppled him. A major platform of the Labor Party is the principle of “no conscription” to which Hughes once had to commit. But man changes as time goes by and becomes forgetful, and rising income and wealth gradually turn a Labor man into a Liberal. It’s these vicissitudes that Mr Hughes is now experiencing! Will he come out of it in good shape? Hughes, by the way, is a classic example of what can become of a man in Australia.
