<p>[Page 80]</p><p>enjoy lying on the slope down to the sea, baking in the sun, watching the play of seagulls and dolphins, and dreaming away. It’s strange though how a small little thing can affect one’s mood. A few days ago I was lying again on my sunny spot when to my joy a small steamship, carrying goods to Kempsey, chugged along very close to the shore and enlivened the scenery even more. All of a sudden the thick smoke from the steamship wafted across my spot, conjuring up memories of train rides, of the homeland, of wife and children. Homesickness began to take hold of me and right there, in brilliant sunshine, with a great view of a magnificent landscape, I experienced the saddest hours of my captivity so far. I have to keep telling myself, don’t muse and ponder or you’ll lose your sanity!</p><p>On the old beach one hut after another has sprung up.
