June 5th left Callao at slow speed looking for Collier.
June 8th Arrived at "Payta" a coastal town in Ecuador. not a very promising place beastly hot and humid. Captain goes ashore leave at 6 p.m.pick up Collier outside
June 10th Stopped to examine Condensers which are leaking very badly. the densities of the boilers are up to 9 ozs. at Night the sea turned Phosphorescent it look like the Antarctic Continent It is due to some form of animalculae It took some 5 hours to steam thro' it Some people on board saw the same phenomenon on the night of the earthquake at Messina our Captain
who was at the relief of the inhabitants confirms the phenomenon occurred.
June 11th Arrived at Callao waiting on Collier.
June 12th Pick up new Collier.
June 13th Arrive at San Nicholas Bay "Newcastle" arrives later.
June 14th Coal ship take in 760 tons.
