waken the Dead then a scramble of men and a few shouts from the Quartermaster then the Engine Room telegraph  rings It is found that the Anchor Chain parted. the Engines were started & again the situation is saved. we were jolly close to being left for a "chart mark" the Engine were kept giving her a kick ahead and astern all night the search has turned out fruitless but we have not yet lost heart. we have practically searched thro' all navigable channels except down by Cape Horn.

March 8th leave Kirke Narrows to go to the Atlantic end of the Straits to give Colliers orders to proceed to Vallinar Roads. pick up Colliers put back to "Punto Arenas"

March 9th Leave "Punto Arenas" Proceed towards Pacific to join "Kent" & "Glasgow'. We pass the "Bristol" at the Pacific entrance still patching up her rudder. she will remain there for some purpose

March 10 &11th Heading for Juan Fernandez in a very heavy sea at full speed it took us all our time to keep our feet below on the middle watch
