their water supply is produced from condensation & evaporation of seawater. The sandhills behind the town are rich in Nitrate of Soda the Mines out in the Pampas is connected to the town by a light railway. there are a few German ships interned and a number of French sailing ships who are laying low on account of the "Dresden"
Jan 29th Proceed to join "Newcastle" & store ship "Celtic" which has just arrived out from home with 1 million pounds sterling worth of stores for various squadrons. We pick them up off "Aosta" put in shorewards to calm water to transfer stores and 54 bags of mail our first Xmas mail a real treat our Captain goes aboard "Newcastle" for Consultation we leave again at night
