they were prospectors looking for fresh deposits of nitrates which the Coast is noted for, its a huge Mound of sand estimated from 500 to 800 feet above sea level in this region there has never been any rain for hundreds of years. The deposits of Nitrates are caused by the wind depositing salt on to the Pampas and takes years to accumulate. Some of the chaps went ashore had a job to land on account of the tricky surf running there is nothing to see
