towards the Magellan Straits to cut off the "Dresden" and "Prinz Eitel Frederick" the[y] suspected they would make for Punta Arenas. We are too late we then turn towards Port Stanley. It appears that the "Kent" was on guard outside the harbour of Port Stanley sighted the German fleet returns and signals the approach from a southerly direction. All ships were coaling at the time, the "Carnarvon" was lying nearest the Entrance of Port Stanley she somehow or other got broadside on the Channel on account of the wind and current she could not turn for some considerable time so delaying the big ships from getting out for luckly she did not go aground the colliers were cast off and men piped to action stations still in coaling gear. All ships soon overhauled the German fleet, but were not in their right positions so the men were ordered to there diner while the ships manoeuvred for better positions
