Meiningen. 3rd February 1830.

In the evening, the Duke conversed with me, on the subject of his Experimental Farm, and of Husbandry in general, particularly Sheep Husbandry.

Having found the Climate unfavorable to the growth of very fine Wool, he turned his attention to the production of fleeces, of middling quality, and greater weight, for which purpose, he crossed the native Ewes of the Country, with the heaviest and largest Merinos, he could procure.

The latter race, he is very careful to preserve pure, selecting however, those which have the heaviest fleeces, in preference to finer wooled animals with less weight.
