The Manufacturers of Cloth, in the former Country, are in flourishing circumstances.
The German Manufactories are also rapidly increasing. Generally speaking, they are on a small scale, & the proprietors, possessors of land also, sufficient for their support, in case of an unfavourable Season for Manufacturing.
When the prices of Wool rise very high, they suffer their factories to remain idle. Neither the German, nor the Belgian Manufacturers buy high priced Wool to any extent. In Germany the fabrication of Merinos from combing wool, has, of late Years, been greatly improved, & is carried on to a considerable extent.
The Proprietors of very fine woolled flocks, are suffering much, from the present reduced prices; the inferior qualities, weighing heavier, and requiring less attention, pay well. Mr Schmidt is of the opinion, that the effect will naturally be a reduction of
