March 12th Pick up Glasgow at 4 p.m. get mails from her.

Mch 13th Steam slowly towards southern part of Island  "Kent" is away to the westward

March 14th The last day of the "Dresden". Juan Fernandez, or Robinson Crusoe Island is sighted at 5.30 a.m., we cruise slowly about till mist clears which hung like a curtain round the Island at 8.30 when everyone had no suspicions that the "Dresden" was so near  the Boatswain mate quietly pipes everyone to their stations and says that the enemy is in sight. I being on watch had no idea what was going on Close watertight doors was rung  down then full ahead my station was in the stokehold as I got in and closed the door   Bang!! goes a broadside from us. It appears that our Captain sighted her first and sent a signal to the "Glasgow"   We were about 9 miles off at the time
