Sept. 17th 1914. The H.M.S "Orama" after completing homeward journey from Sydney was taken over by the Admiralty and fitted out as an armed Merchantman with 8 - 6" guns, the ship's Company was composed of R.N.R. [Royal Naval Reserve] men made up of North Sea Fishermen and Merchant service sailors to the complement of 368. We left Tilbury on the above date for our destination followed out of the docks by the Edinburgh Castle of the Union Castle line we stop off Portland Bill to adjust Compasses, drop Pilot get under weigh immediately on a Southerly course Pass Ushant at dusk on the 18th.
Sept 22nd Gun trials in the Bay of Biscay. Gun trials were very successfull except that the concussions shattered all the light panes of glass all over the ship. The ship withstood the shock of a broadside splendidly.
