Dear Judge Ferguson,
I cannot tell you how grateful I am to you for your letter which arrived this afternoon. It is so comforting to know that you understood my friendship with Arthur. I think I shall never have another friend like him.
I was glad to know Sir, that you appreciated how much he was to his men and to his Battalion. They would have gone anywhere done anything for him. A man to lead men and one after their own heart.
It is indeed a dark hour for you and yours. Our grief is so poignant and yet one cannot quite realise it.
I can't tell you how very very much I sympathise with you.
I remember so well that last day at Liverpool when we all felt the parting so deeply. Arthur & I were but little apart from then on.
Keith is still in England. He and I have written to and received letters from each officer. Some time in the future we may run across each other. That will be great.
Thank you so very much for your offer of friendship and hospitality, of which I shall hasten to avail myself when this is over, and also for the enclosures. I shall always keep them and your letter.
Yours very sincerely
Wallis MacCallen
