My dear Judge
Last evening, when I got home, I found that my wife had a longer letter from Walker. Some of it is occluded with the content of his experiences, now with a command behind & haystack when he hears his first cuckoo, now at the front where it seems like Hell. But there is one passenger which my wife has asked me to whey out, for it is one more proof, if that were needed, that you son has not lived in vain & that his spirit still speaks:
"The world is still very blank and empty without Arthur.
Somehow I still feel as if I would see him again if I were to go down to the 20th. The first great pain has so far passed away, that I can now thank God for the Brave fellow he was and the privileges of a friend lie him. It acts as a spur on us all, to strive harder for the end and right, & to whom the great run to its finish, with a sprint towards the finish".
Testimonies liken that from the truth, if one could only relive it in one's own case, that it is not the quantity but the quality of life that matters.
With constant sympathy love to you all
I am
Yours very truly
M.W. MacCallum
