promotion. The establishment only allows of a corporal as clerk, & if he happens to know a little law I suppose he can be employed as a lawyer. We work from 9 to 6.30, or any later hour necessary on work days, and I understand that there will be a half holiday on Sunday …It is rather hard to have travelled 16000 miles on F. Deck T.S.S. A.64 for this. Such is the effect of a Past on a mana's career. I shall stick it for a fortnight & then make an appeal to the General's better nature!. Poor old Bris.! He is frightened that the Sydney Bar will think he applied for the job, & that he had no intention of ever going to the front.

Duffy & I went on weekend leave to London last week-end, & I got in touch with Mel. He came round to lunch on Sunday – we had a long talk but he had not quite made up his mind what he is going to do yet. We went down Middelsex St (Petticoat Lane) in the afternoon through the slums.
