We had a hard trip across, lasting 9 weeks, during which we only had some route marches at Capetown to remind us that the land was solid. The mess deck was below water level, badly ventilated and overcrowded, the food was bad, and we ran so short of water, owing to the engines being out of order that after leaving St Vincent we has to part company from our convoy and put into Maderia. There was a good deal of sickness on board, chiefly dengue fever from which I suffered for a month. I continues to do duty with the Company, as well as taking a signaller's watch on the bridge, until the very day we came into Plymouth
