While I was in France the fighting at Pozieres was well on and going through the field hospitals I met many men just an hour or so from the firing line. The poor 1st Division had had a rough time particularly my brigade. The work done had been splendid and at that stage the village was well in our hands.
But we had to pay a heavy price – and – as on many & past occasions a lot of our men had been too enthusiastic by going too far and coming under our own artillery fire.
