being sold in the streets – anything from a toothpick to a bullock. More than three quarters of the population are children, & it really is amusing picking out the Christians.

I received a copy of the letter you wrote to the manager bank, & on Saturday paid a visit to the bank manager. We talked the matter over, & I decided to do the same as his own son is doing – to deposit the letter in the bank & write to him to send money & drafts. He will send it in French, German, Turkish, Russian, Chinese, in fact any sort of money I may require. This will relieve me from the anxiety of keeping my eyes on the letter the whole time.

Talking about letters, I am the luckiest officer in that respect in the Coy. Each mail brings me letters & papers from you & my friends. It is great to be able to keep in touch with Australian news. I am glad Mr Holman was decorated – he deserves it.

It makes me smile to think of the cries of shame from Potts Pt.
