My dear Judge,
This is to try & thank you & Mrs Ferguson for all your kindness to me, which I did appreciate though at the time I'm afraid I did not appear to be very grateful. There are so many things I had meant to say in this letter, as writing always seems to me easier that talking, but now it is just as hard to write & I had better not make the attempt.
