Dear Judge
I heard of your loss at Perham Downs Depot from a man of the 20th. He was very enthusiastic about Captain Ferguson, whose men trusted him and liked him greatly. Men – at all events Australians – are keen critics, and have no time for an officer unless he is competent, and can be thoroughly relied on. Sympathy is an empty thing, but I can realise with what pride you would have welcomed your son if he had been spared to come back to you, and the contrast between what might have been and what is will give his mother and yourself many a heartaches.
