My dear father,

While in London I was introduced to Sgt. Maj. Charker (20th Batt) who was with Arthur on June 14th – a shell burst right in the dugout, & he was killed instantly. He was at all times brave & cool, & on May 5th, when the Germans raided the trenches occupied by the 2oth. Was highly commended for his gallantry. He was in command of the section of trench attacked, & though knocked down time & again, never lost his head, & behaved with marked coolness throughout. Dr Scott-Skirving told me that he read a report dealing with his engagement, in which it stated that 'The only redeeming feature in the whole proceedings was the gallant behaviour of Capt. Ferguson'. He was loved alike by officers & men, & his cheerfulness & unselfishness won the hearts of all.

He was properly buried, & if I can, I will find out the exact place.
