[Governor General] gave a speech & we gave him cheers – next work was to get on the good side of the Customs Officials who questioned us as to what we had in our boxes &c. & if satisfied they put a mark on them – I got all mine through – we then marched off the ship and got into motor cars (about 300) & were driven into & all round the streets of Melbourne between lines of cheering people waving flags &c then up to the Barracks where we got leave & cleared.  I came on to the Port Phillip Club Hotel and have been looking round the place.  The flowers &c are glorious everywhere & the Public Gardens are very fine, shall
