When I sent this news round you can imagine the deep disappointment but later when I recd further particulars & pointed out the danger the Offrs [Officers] & Men settled down.
There have been as many as 300 deaths per day and at time of our arrival there were 42,000 people down with it. All Theatres, Churchs & Public places were closed, Train & Tram service cut down to the lowest – we thought the Authorities would send us round to Durbin [Durban] where the populace were getting better but no such luck, we are to remain at anchor for 4 days & night while they give us coal & water. Tonight it is a sight to see the blaze of electric lights on shore
