packed - estimated about 40,000 U.S. troops on board, as the ships passed ours the Bands on board played & the Tug & ferry boats whistled Cock a doodle - one of the boats was the Benalla the one I left Australia in on 19th Oct 1914 just 4 years ago.

Today we were told off to our life boats - I am in charge of No 6 Port L.B. 2 Doctors 6 Nurses 6 crew (Naval sailors returning from HMS Sydney & Australia) 14 Tubercular cases 8 Hospital cases - or 40 souls all told - I pray God that we shall not need to take to the boats, but of course all must be in readiness.
