Tuesday 8th Oct. 1918
Weather cool, sea calm, nice breeze.  I find that the fireman who died on board leaves a wife & 4 children with another expected, from inquiries made it appears the poor widow receives £5 only from the Firemans Union, so Christie & I have commenced to collect for the poor unfortunate family, we expect to get £40 at least that is one good thing about the Australian, he always gives what he can to such a case – we have with Church collections &c &c got in fully £20 for the Widows & Orphans of the Seamen's Fund.

Usual inspection of ship this morning Troop Decks very clean, Capt[ain] of ship very pleased.  Fancy I was
