distance away towards the American coast.  Last night was most trying my pyjamas this morning were wet through with perspiration.  The Flying fish are darting away from the ships sides – they come out of the water & fly about 30 or 40 yards & into it again. Wonder what you are all doing at Fircroft, the week ends always keep me thinking of what is going on, if tennis is still the rage &c.

Tuesday 1/10/18
Today there is a nice cool breeze blowing two sailing & one steam ship passed us on the westward side but a good distance off.

Influenza has not been beaten yet Major Higgins the O.C. [Officer Commanding] is now down & I have to take command. We had a burial today one
