South keeping the Cape Verde Islands well over on our port (or left side). If the Almighty guards us south of them for a few days we shall be able to drop our life belts back into their racks.  The first 3 days out we wore them now we carry them round with us & I have caused some amount of amusement by making the Officers pay me sixpence each time I catch them without their belts – this money I hand over to the Purser for the widows & orphans of the Fishermen & Mariners Society, so far 30 Officers have paid me. Should one forget it (the life belt) now the others
