from the wharves two big tugs came alongside and began to pump fresh water into our tanks – we also got a cable stating the Minister of Defence forbid any one to go ashore under any pretext – so here we are gazing at the splendid City of Durban but not a chance to stretch our legs ashore or leave the ship – again it was at first a bitter disappointment but the men have settled down now – they are amusing themselves by throwing hot pennys over to the niggers on the tug boats, one nigger got one down his shirt & you would scream with laughter to see the antics he cut
