The first settlement which was formed in Van Diemen's Land was at Retsdown on the Eastern Side of the Derwent. Captain Philip Gidley King 1802.

Meanwhile Lieutenant Colonel Collins of the Marines arrived at Port Phillip in His Majesty's Ship the Calcutta with prisoners, and the Ocean Transport  with stores and provisions.

Could not find water, as had been provided in case of the place being found inconvenient
proceeded to the Derwent. He removed from Retsdown to the opposite side
of the river Sullivan's cove. a fine creek, but very heavily timbered. This gentleman died, buried in Church yard - a monument.
