Involucrum of 4 leaves, egg-shaped, broad, sharp, sitting, when viewed with a magnifier full of transparent dots, and frequently bordered with crimson. Blossom snow white, hairy on the outside. Stamens nearly as long as the border, crimson at the base. Anthers orange, oblong with 2 furrows. Pistil a little longer than the tube. Flower scentless.

I suspect this shrub varies in appearance according to the soil it grows in, or else there are distinct species that much resemble each other

Cal. Cup 1 leaf, with 4 sharp reflected segments.

Stam. Filaments 8, fixed to the bottom of the cup, thread shaped, projecting, Anthers 2 upon each filament, fixed by the upper and end, pendant, double.
Stem branching, without hairs; branches 3 square, scored. Flowers several together, sitting. Leaves & floral leaves very small, spear-shaped, with a few teeth, rolled back at the edges, longer than the flowers. Segments of the blossom purple.
