Mr Brown informs me this is Craspedia uniflora or Forst

Syngenesia Polygamia Segregata
Cal. Common name, unless the floral leaves be considered as seeds.  Florets in bundles forming a globular head. Bundles on little fruit stalks. Florets separated membranaceous egg shaped scales.
Partial Husk 1 valve, egg shaped, containing several florets.

Bloss. Individual funnel-shaped, longer than the scales. Tube very long, slender, distended at the base. Border funnel shaped, with 5 or 6 reflected segments.

Stam. Filaments 5, hairlike, as long as the tube Anthers forming a hollow cylinder, with 5 teeth.

Pist. Germen very small. Style thread shaped as long as the stamens with a small gland at its base Summits 2 expanding.

S. Vess none, the seeds enclosed by the membranaceous scales.

Seeds inversely egg shaped.  Down long feathered.  Plant mostly from 18 inches to 2 feet high.  Root consisting of thick black fibres, Root leaves spear shaped, tapering down into long channelled leaf stalks, & thinly beset with short hairs. Stem leaves few, becoming less as they as-
