Avena, filaments slender
Panicled calyx 4 flowered; all the flowers are red, covered with long hairs.

Straw frequently a yard high. Leaves narrow, rolled inwards; Sheath scales hairy, Panicle compact. Calyx, valves ending in long awned points, containing 4 Florets.

Blossom, outer valves deeply divided, the divisions tapering out into fine long awns. Proper or twisted awn from the back of the outer valve, at the base of the divisions, which gives the outer valve the appearance of having 3 awns; the lower part is covered with long white hairs, which secret the whole floret; inner valve very small in proportion to the outer. Filament very fine, and scarcely to be found without great care.  Anthers dull red. Summits pubescent.

It has much the appearance Aira avenacea, but is easily distinguished upon examination.
