at the coal wharf. Immediately we arrived a huge hoist was brought alongside & coaling commenced. The hoist lifted about 6 or 7 tons each trip. Though the method is fast it is very dirty. An Indian hawker succeeded in selling me a deal of fancy goods, though, of course I only gave him about half the price he asked for everything. After dinner Purser 2nd & 3rd Mates & self walked around to a whaling station which is built facing the sea. The head of one huge specimen was being dissected while we were there. I had no idea that anything like this size of this mammon ever existed.
