trough. The Geelong gradually overhauled us till by 5pm she was abeam. The wind dropped for about an hour at 4pm, but after tea it picked up its former velocity and brought drizzling rain with it. It is well for us that the sea is a following one instead of a head sea for instead of doing twelve knots, it would take her all her time to maintain her ground. Some of the waves from crest to crest are longer than the ship, and she sinks in a hollow as deep as the lower bridge when she strikes one of these.
